Netflix just added 37 new movies and shows to kick off July 2026. The first day of the month is typically the biggest for the streaming service; it’s when Netflix adds the majority of the classic library titles (aka not originals) to its catalogue. This month was no exception, but it also added some new original shows and movies today.
Regardless, 37 new movies and shows are a lot of new titles to sort through in a single day. So I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t know where to start. Lucky for you, I’ve already looked through everything new on Netflix in July, and I have five movies worth adding to your watchlist today.
Since we’re now fully into summer, it’s officially baseball season. So I’m recommending you check out “A League of Their Own” and “Moneyball,” two of the best sports movies made in my lifetime, but with very different vibes. If baseball isn’t for you, then check out “Born on the Fourth of July.” Or, if you’re not looking to question what it means to be American, start streaming “Fargo” the second you’re done reading this article. Finally, for those who can’t wait for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” you should give yourself a refresher and stream “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” which was just added to Netflix today.

What it’s about: “A League of Their Own” is the story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League— specifically, the Rockford Peaches. Set during World War II, these women keep the sport of baseball alive while the men have gone off to fight. The roster is loaded, too: Geena Davis stars as Dorothy “Dottie” Hinson, Madonna as “All the Way” Mae Mordabito, Lori Petty as Kit Keller and Rosie O’Donnell as Doris Murphy. Don’t forget manager Jimmy Dugan, played by the incomparable Tom Hanks.
Why you should watch it: When you read the line “There’s no crying in baseball,” you know it’s about “A League of Their Own.” It’s that iconic. So if you have never seen that line before, or heard someone say it but didn’t know why, now’s the time to watch this all-time classic sports movie.

‘Born on the Fourth of July’ (1989)
Genre: Biographical anti-war drama movie
What’s it about? “Born on the Fourth of July” stars Tom Cruise as Ron Kovic, and it follows Ron’s life from childhood through school and then joining the Marines to fight in a war like his World War II veteran father. But in Vietnam, he lives through traumatic horrors, and ultimately dedicates his life to being an anti-war activist.
What to read next
Why you should watch it: This movie is based on the memoir of the real Rod Kovic, who co-wrote the movie’s screenplay along with director Oliver Stone, so the experiences you’ll see on screen are the real deal. Between Cruise’s Oscar-nominated performance and Stone’s Oscar-winning direction, there are worse ways to spend this July 4 than watching “Born on the Fourth of July.”

‘Fargo’ (1996)

Genre: Black comedy crime movie
What’s it about? “Fargo” stars Frances McDormand as Marge Gunderson, the police chief of Brainerd, Minnesota, and William H. Macy as Jerry Lundegaard, a car salesman in (relatively) nearby Minneapolis. It centers around these two as Marge begins to investigate a triple homicide perpetrated by a pair of hitmen (Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare), who, it turns out, Jerry hired to kidnap his own wife, Jean (Kristin Rudrüd).
Why you should watch it: “Fargo” is a great place to start if you’ve never seen a Coen Brothers movie before. It gives you a sense of both the darkness and the humor that they bring to their films; if you’ve ever seen a clip of a man feeding body parts into a wood chipper, that’s from this movie.

‘Moneyball’ (2011)
Genre: Biographical sports drama movie
What it’s about: Based on Michael Lewis’s book of the same name, “Moneyball” is the dramatic retelling of how the A’s general manager, Billy Beane (Brad Pitt), transformed how every Major League Baseball team evaluates talent. If you’re a former Oakland A’s fan, “Moneyball” is the story of how a team succeeded despite poor ownership, but for everyone else, it’s the tale of how baseball changed forever.
Why you should watch it: This movie isn’t flawless; it leaves out Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder, Barry Zito, Eric Chavez and Miguel Tejada. But it’s still one of my favorite movies ever made. Pitt and Hill’s performances are incredible, and it’s a supremely rewatchable film.

‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ (2017)

Genre: Marvel superhero movie
What it’s about: Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is just your average high school student with a complicated high school crush. Well, aside from the fact that he’s secretly Spider-Man, a superhero who just helped save the world as part of the Avengers. That part isn’t so typical, and it makes Peter’s life almost impossible to balance.
Why you should watch it: This is probably my favorite “Spider-Man” movie. It nails its portrayal of Peter as a high school student, something previous versions of Spider-Man largely missed or avoided. Michael Keaton’s Vulture is also an incredibly underrated villain.
