I used NotebookLM to offload my mental clutter for a week — here’s what I stopped stressing about

I used NotebookLM to offload my mental clutter for a week — here’s what I stopped stressing about

I didn’t realize how much of my brain was being wasted on remembering tiny things until I stopped trying to remember them altogether. The other day I tried to log into a computer I hadn’t used for a few months and completely blanked on the password. I also missed a friend’s birthday and barely managed to order a gift for my own mother in time for Mother’s Day. Needless to say, I have a lot on my mind that feels like constant mental clutter.

So, instead of trying to do it all myself, I treated Google NotebookLM like an external brain. No, I wasn’t letting it make decisions for me or do any critical thinking. I let it help me be more productive and take some of the stress out of my life. Here’s what happened.

NotebookLM is designed as a source-grounded AI research and organization tool, meaning it works from the documents, notes and sources you upload. Plus, it has the ability to search the web, so it can use those sources right within the platform. By using NotebookLM to help me stay organized, I noticed that I stopped mentally carrying dozens of tiny responsibilities around all day long. Normally my brain treats every decent idea like an urgent task, even an emergency.

But after a week of dumping everything into NotebookLM from story angles to random observations and half-finished ideas, AI took care of organizing the chaos. So, instead of searching through tabs and documents, I could ask NotebookLM to sift through all the ideas I uploaded. Rather than rereading the same PDFs, notes, Slack messages and articles constantly because I didn’t trust myself to fully retain the important parts, I let AI help.

NotebookLM gave each topic its own ‘mental container’

NotebookLM reduced a surprising amount of mental fatigue. Because I stopped trying to keep every project in my head. NotebookLM gave each topic its own “mental container.”

I created separate notebooks for story ideas, AI research, family stuff and long-term projects. That way, the second something went into the notebook, my brain stopped trying to actively hold onto it. And while that sounds dramatic, it genuinely changed my stress level.

Since NotebookLM is available within the Gemini AI mobile app, it made it even easier to add ideas on the go. Part of mental overload comes from the feeling that information is piling up faster than you can process it.

Using NotebookLM’s Audio Overviews to catch up

NotebookLM’s Audio Overviews feature gave me a hands-off opportunity to catch up while I was driving, cleaning or even watching my son’s soccer game. Because the tool can generate podcast-style discussions from your uploaded material, it essentially turns dense notes into something you can listen to any time.

Instead of sitting down to ‘catch up’ on reading, I started listening to summaries while doing other things.

Instead of sitting down to “catch up” on reading, I started listening to summaries while doing other things. Suddenly, the pile of information felt manageable again. I stopped obsessing over organizing everything perfectly

Before AI tools like this, organizing information felt like a daunting task. From folders and endless notes, I never had time to go through it all. But NotebookLM is really good at finding patterns even when your notes are messy. So instead of spending energy creating the perfect system, I focused on simply capturing information.

The AI handled the retrieval later, which reduced a huge amount of invisible mental anxiety that I was carrying.

    The takeaway

I’ve tested and reviewed a lot of AI tools, but I keep coming back to NotebookLM for productivity and organization. It does so much in one platform. I went into this experiment expecting a productivity boost, but I wasn’t expecting how much lighter my brain would feel by the end of the week.

NotebookLM didn’t magically take any work off my plate or make my personal life any less busy, but it did help me organize my thoughts to eliminate stress. For me, that’s where I’ve seen AI the most useful these days. Leaning on AI tools to not replace me or automate jobs entirely, but to help with the tasks that overwhelm me and reduce mental weight.
