The company says the browser stops pre‑roll, mid‑roll, and other in‑player ads on YouTube when users watch videos within its browser. It also uses the same technology to block video ads on other sites.
The DuckDuckGo browser uses filter lists and custom rules to identify ads, then block them and their tracking requests. This prevents users from seeing disruptive marketing material while allowing video streams and player controls to work normally. The company says this approach gives users an ad‑free YouTube experience without paid subscriptions and reduces the data that advertisers and platforms collect during viewing.
YouTube ad blocking is turned on by default on iPhone and Mac. On Windows, users just need to install the latest DuckDuckGo build, and on Android, users must activate YouTube ad blocking in the browser’s settings.
Of course, ad blockers have their downsides: Websites, creators, and streaming platforms rely on ads for revenue, and every blocked ad means a little less money for the recipient. Still, we wouldn’t be surprised if this new feature helps convert more users of mainstream browsers to DuckDuckGo.
