Sony’s leadership has started to talk more openly about what it wants for the next generation of PlayStation hardware, and its latest investor Q&A gives a clearer idea of the direction.
In the Q&A, Sony president Hideaki Nishino, studio business CEO Hermen Hulst, and senior vice president of finance Lynn Azar said the next PlayStation platform will offer “a seamless experience that can be enjoyed naturally beyond the living room,” expanding on how and where people play instead of keeping the console tied to a TV setup.
“PlayStation has long been strongly associated with the idea of playing in the living room,” reads one of the responses. “However, in recent years, more users globally have been using personal monitors. In response, we are selling peripherals such as monitors and speakers to break away from the fixed perception that ‘PlayStation equals the living room’ and to broaden usage scenarios.”
Executives went on to say that they want next‑gen hardware to go beyond offering an alternative to a gaming PC. The company also notes that it does not plan to sell hardware at a significant loss in the future, which could mean only one thing: the console is going to be expensive.
It just so happens that a well‑known gaming hardware leaker claimed this week that the PlayStation 6 will cost the company close to $1,000 in materials alone. After accounting for research and development, logistics, marketing, and other costs, who knows how much the actual console could cost consumers?
Sony has not commented on the PS6’s exact pricing.
