Samsung Slashes Galaxy Z Fold 7 Price Ahead Of Fold 8: Wait Or Buy?

Samsung has dropped the Galaxy Z Fold 7 price by $200 ahead of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 release next month, but the discount is bittersweet because of the Samsung’s recent foldable price hike. How bittersweet exactly? That depends on where you buy the phone.

Every storage tier is down $200 in the U.S., bringing the 256GB model down to $1,799. That is a genuine deal, but it doesn’t stack up against the $1,599 price drop last November that knocked $400 off the phone.

That perhaps reflects the reality of higher costs impacting the company’s deals right now because of the memory crisis. For the higher storage tiers, which went up by $80 this year, the $200 price drop is less eye-catching.

In the U.K. buyers can get £300 ($396) in cashback (as Samsung Wallet credit) until June 23rd when buying the Galaxy Z Fold 7. That’s five weeks before the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra lands at Unpacked London on July 22.

So if you’ve been eyeing a Galaxy Z Fold 7, this is what you’ll pay today. The 256GB is now $1,799.99 (was $1,999.99), the 512GB drops to $1,999.99 (was $2,199.99) and the 1TB falls to $2,299.99 (was $2,499.99).

In the U.K., Samsung’s cashback promotion adds up to £300 back on SIM-free Galaxy purchases, loaded directly to your Samsung Wallet. If you want to call that a discount, it brings the price down to £1,499.

The better promotion, though, is with Amazon which has dropped the Fold 7 price down to £1,579 and buyers are still eligible for the £300 cashback. So that’s £520 ($687) off altogether. That’s the most aggressive Z Fold 7 discount I’ve seen since it launched.

This price drop ends before Unpacked. Subscribe to my free newsletter and I’ll tell you the moment the best Z Fold 8 deal arrives on July 22.

So Should You Buy The Galaxy Z Fold 7 Now?

The real question is whether you should buy a Galaxy Z Fold 7 that is weeks away from being replaced. That very much depends on what you’re after.

First of all, there’s nothing wrong with the phone. It being replaced by a newer model doesn’t make it less good or ‘old’. And the leaks suggest the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will be an iterative update, with the new Wide Fold the real star of the show.

What I liked about the Fold 7 when I initially tried it out still holds true: the new ultra slim design remains revolutionary for foldales, Samsung’s foldable UI is still the best in the game and the battery life is surprisingly good.

But There Are Two Reasons To Hold Off From Buying The Galaxy Z Fold 7

First, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide. It’s launching alongside the Z Fold 8 Ultra at Unpacked on July 22. It’s lighter, has a wider outer and inner screen that actually works like a normal phone one-handed. Wide-screen videos will look much better on an inner screen designed for them, so say goodbye to aggressive letterboxing.

Second, the price trajectory. The Z Fold 8 launch will push the Galaxy Z Fold 7 price down further, not up. If you still want it after July 22, you’ll almost certainly get it cheaper than today.
