Prime Video’s free movie library has become a little harder to navigate since Freevee was folded into the main streaming service, with ad-supported titles now sitting alongside everything else on the platform. Unlike the streamer’s major monthly additions, these free movies also tend to arrive quietly, meaning plenty of worthwhile titles can get missed each month.

So, after digging through Prime Video’s recently added section, I picked out five movies that are actually worth your time this week. Better yet, you don’t need a Prime membership to watch them. Whether you’re after an intense action-thriller, a dark psychological drama, or a fun crime movie, there are some surprisingly solid movies currently streaming for free.

    ‘The Hunt’ (2020)

    Watch On

If you enjoy movies that refuse to take themselves seriously while still being incredibly violent, “The Hunt” deserves a spot on your watchlist. This satirical action-thriller gives off strong “Ready or Not” and “The Purge” vibes, except it takes place in the wilderness and offers a more cynical outlook on modern social dynamics. One of the movie’s biggest strengths is how much fun it has subverting expectations. It constantly introduces characters who seem like they’ll become the main hero, only to kill them off moments later.

“The Hunt” follows a group of strangers who wake up in a remote clearing with no idea how they got there or why they’ve been taken. As panic spreads, they realize they’re being hunted by a wealthy group running a deadly game in the wilderness. While the captives scramble to survive, one woman named Crystal (Betty Gilpin) quickly proves she’s far more capable than the hunters expected. She soon begins turning the tables on those tracking her down.

    ‘The War Between’ (2024)

    Watch On

Next on this list is an intimate, character-driven western that focuses on a specific, often overlooked corner of American history: the Civil War’s reach into the Southwest. The film leans into the harshness of the Sonoran Desert while also exploring how personal history and trauma clash when people from opposing sides are stripped of their armies and forced into a survival situation. It’s well worth a watch if you enjoy more slow-burning stories.

“The War Between” is set during the early months of the American Civil War and follows two enemy soldiers stranded in the harsh Sonoran Desert after a battle near Tucson. One fights for the Union while the other supports the Confederacy, but with supplies running low and danger surrounding them, the pair are forced to work together to stay alive. As they travel through the unforgiving landscape, they face extreme weather and a mysterious Apache guide who changes the course of their journey.

    ‘Lost in the Sun’ (2015)

Lost in the Sun Official Trailer 1 (2015) – Josh Duhamel, Lynn Collins Movie HD – YouTube

    Watch On

“Lost in the Sun” is an independent road movie about the unlikely bond formed between a seasoned criminal and a young orphan. It avoids the polished look of big-budget dramas and instead goes for a grittier style that better suits the story. This is definitely one of Josh Duhamel’s more overlooked movies, which is a shame because he delivers a surprisingly transformative performance. Those looking for something more action-packed and larger in scale may not connect with it though.

Louis (Josh Wiggins) is a teenage boy struggling after the death of his mother, who unexpectedly crosses paths with a small-time criminal named John (Josh Duhamel). Instead of heading to live with relatives, Louis ends up joining John on a dangerous road trip across the American Southwest. Traveling from town to town, they become involved in a series of robberies while trying to stay ahead of people searching for John. Along the way, Louis slowly learns more about John’s mysterious past and the reasons behind his reckless lifestyle.

‘The Roundup: No Way Out’ (2023)

The Roundup: No Way Out – Official Trailer – YouTube

    Watch On

You don’t need to see the first two movies to enjoy “The Roundup: No Way Out.” Because the series follows a case-of-the-week procedural format, this third installment is designed to work as a standalone experience. This film is pure action comfort food, and doesn’t ask you to solve a complex puzzle, but instead just enjoy the spectacle of a human juggernaut clearing a room of bad guys. If you end up loving it, you can always go back and watch the first two films as earlier entries in the series.

“The Roundup: No Way Out” centers around Detective Ma Seok-do (Ma Dong-seok) as he joins a new metropolitan unit to investigate a suspicious death linked to a powerful synthetic drug called “Hiper.” The case quickly pulls him into a wider criminal network involving corrupt police officers, local gangs, and a Japanese Yakuza group, all competing for control of the drug trade. Soon, the standard investigation quickly escalates into a multi-sided conflict, with Ma caught in the middle as violence spreads across Seoul.

    ‘The Motel Life’ (2013)

The Motel Life Official Trailer #1 (2013) – Dakota Fanning Movie HD – YouTube

    Watch On

We’re ending this list with a harrowing psychological drama. “The Motel Life” is a melancholic, visually poetic movie based on the novel by Willy Vlautin. It’s a gritty yet deeply empathetic look at life on the fringes of society, using some really creative storytelling choices. One being the use of hand-drawn animation, where the film frequently breaks away from reality into fantastical animated sequences. These segments illustrate the tall tales and legends the brothers invent to cope with their bleak circumstances.

Frank (Emile Hirsch) and Jerry Lee (Stephen Dorff) are two brothers who drift through life in Reno, working odd jobs and staying in cheap motels while relying on each other to get by. After Jerry Lee is involved in a hit-and-run accident, the pair immediately flee town in a panic. As they try to stay ahead of the consequences, their situation becomes increasingly unstable, forcing them from place to place while tensions rise between them. Along the way, Frank reconnects with his old girlfriend Annie (Dakota Fanning), while Jerry Lee struggles with injury and worsening condition.
