Sony is introducing a new 1080p High Quality mode to the PlayStation Portal through a software update. The handheld already supported 1080p streaming, but the new High Quality option increases the bitrate, resulting in a cleaner image, especially in fast‑moving scenes and detailed environments.

1080p High Quality mode works for both PS5 Remote Play and PlayStation Cloud Streaming. Users can switch to the new mode from the Quick Menu under Max Resolution, then restart their session for the change to take effect. Sony says players need a strong and stable connection because 1080p High Quality mode uses more data than the standard 1080p setting.

The update also introduces UX improvements. Changes to the product detail page in Cloud Streaming reportedly make it easier for players to choose which game in a bundle they want to stream. New users can also scan a code with their phone to create or sign in to a PlayStation Network account during onboarding, eliminating the need to enter credentials in the Portal itself.

Sony says these changes are a result of increased engagement among cloud-based gamers. According to its announcement, Cloud Streaming monthly users spiked by 162% year-over-year this January, and more than half of PlayStation Portal users are PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers.

For existing Portal owners with strong home networks, the new High Quality mode and interface tweaks together aim to make remote and cloud play more reliable and visually consistent.
