The company positions GPT‑5.5 as an evolution of GPT‑5 that builds on reasoning, tool use, and most importantly, long‑context processing. This reportedly emphasizes real‑world workloads such as coding, research, multi‑step workflows, and more.
GPT‑5.5 aims to handle longer and messier prompts more effectively. The model can work across much larger codebases and document sets without losing track of details. OpenAI claims that the model better understands what users want, even when their questions are unclear.
It also keeps track of users’ conversations over time, which should help reduce the need for repeated explanations and complex commands and instructions. Coverage also says improvements in “agentic coding,” where the model can read, edit, and test code across projects using tools in a loop that resembles a junior engineer’s workflow, TechCrunch reports.
OpenAI is releasing GPT‑5.5 to paid ChatGPT users on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans, with a higher‑end GPT‑5.5 Pro tier reserved for Pro and enterprise options. Free users will not get access to GPT‑5.5 at launch.
OpenAI has reserved API access to GPT‑5.5 for a later date. The company said that GPT-5.5 has better safety features and is more likely to refuse to engage in sensitive discussions. At the same time, it is made to handle more complex tasks in the real world.
