A decade in the making, “One in a Million” is a feature-length documentary that follows Israa and her family as they flee Syria and try to rebuild their lives in Germany, only to be forced to return, raising difficult questions about what “home” really means.

You can watch “One in a Million” online from anywhere with a VPN (try risk-free) – and potentially for free.

‘One in a Million’ release date and time

“One in a Million” does not have a confirmed TV or streaming date yet. It is still in its festival run after its Sundance premiere in January 2026.

    • WATCH FREE U.K. — BBC iPlayer (dates TBC)
    • WATCH U.S. — PBS FRONTLINE (dates TBC)
    • Watch anywhere — try NordVPN 100% risk free

It premiered at Sundance in January 2026 and is still on the festival circuit. So if you’re hunting for a streaming link right now, the key thing to know is this: a wider release is confirmed via the BBC in the UK and PBS FRONTLINE in the US, but the exact TV and streaming dates haven’t been announced yet.

Directors Itab Azzam and Jack MacInnes began filming in 2015, when Israa was just 11 years old and selling cigarettes in Turkey. The film went on to win both the World Cinema Documentary Audience Award and the Directing Award at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.

Here’s how to stream “One in a Million” from anywhere with a VPN, and what’s confirmed — plus what’s still to come — for viewers around the world.

Watch ‘One in a Million’ from anywhere

If you’re away from home when “One in a Million” finally lands, you may find your usual streaming apps look different — or don’t work at all — depending on the country you’re in. A VPN (virtual private network) lets your device appear as though it’s back in your home country, so you can use your existing services more reliably while you’re travelling.

We’ve tested a lot of services, and NordVPN consistently stands out as one of the best all-rounders for streaming, with fast speeds and broad device support. You can also try it risk-free thanks to its 30-day money-back guarantee.

    Using a VPN is simple.

    1. Install the VPN app on the device you’ll watch on. NordVPN is our pick.

    2. Connect to a server in your home country. For example, choose a UK server to access BBC iPlayer while abroad.

    3. Open your streaming app and play as normal.

In the UK, “One in a Million” is expected to air on BBC Four before becoming available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

It’s a BBC Storyville co-production, so it will most likely appear under the Storyville strand once the BBC confirms the schedule.

The missing piece is the date. For now, it’s still in its post-Sundance festival run.

If you’re outside the UK when it launches, a VPN like NordVPN can help you access BBC iPlayer with your usual BBC account and device setup while you’re travelling.

In the US, “One in a Million” is set to air on PBS and stream across PBS’s digital platforms, including the PBS FRONTLINE website, the PBS app, and PBS’s YouTube channel.

That usually means you’ll be able to watch for free, although the exact availability window will depend on PBS and your local station’s schedule.

What you can’t do just yet is stream it straight away. As of March 2026, the film is still in its festival window and isn’t available for general US broadcast or streaming.

If you’re a Brit in the States for work or on holiday and would rather stick with your usual UK streaming setup, you can still watch via BBC iPlayer by using a VPN such as NordVPN. Just connect to a UK server, then open BBC iPlayer as you normally would.

Watch ‘One in a Million’ in Canada

A specific Canadian broadcaster or streaming service hasn’t been confirmed yet. What we do know is that the film is a PBS FRONTLINE and BBC Storyville co-production, with a US release planned via PBS platforms.

Once the US release happens, Canadian viewers may be able to watch via PBS’s digital options, but availability can vary by region and rights.

If you want to see it as soon as possible, your best bet is to keep an eye on PBS FRONTLINE’s release announcements and YouTube channel, as both are explicitly part of the rollout plan.

If you’re a Brit in the Great White North for work or on holiday and would rather stick with your usual UK streaming setup, you can still use your normal services by connecting through a VPN such as NordVPN.

Australia doesn’t yet have confirmed broadcast or streaming details. International sales are being handled separately from the US and UK rollout, so timing and platform will depend on local licensing.

If you’re a Brit working or on holiday Down Under and want to keep using your usual UK streaming services, you can still catch the show using a VPN like NordVPN.

When will it be on TV?

Following its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2026, the film is currently in its festival run. It’s scheduled to premiere on PBS in the US and BBC Four in the UK later in 2026, though specific dates are still to be confirmed.

How long did it take to film?

The directors, Itab Azzam and Jack MacInnes, followed the family for a decade, starting in 2015 when Israa was 11 years old.

    What awards has it won?

The film won the World Cinema Documentary Audience Award at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.
