Google has launched a dedicated Gemini app for macOS, bringing its AI assistant directly to the desktop for Macs with Apple silicon running macOS 15 Sequoia and later.
The app’s introduction follows Apple and Google’s January announcement of a multi‑year deal in which Gemini will power the (repeatedly delayed) next-generation Siri. The brands say Gemini will power some of Apple’s foundational models, run new Siri capabilities, and back more Apple Intelligence features that Apple plans to roll out starting later this year.
After installing the app, users can launch it via the global Option + Space shortcut or open a full-window interface to chat with the assistant without switching to a browser.
Apart from what all AI chatbots can do, Gemini for macOS can view and query shared app windows, allowing it to read local files and web pages. This type of access must be granted in system settings. The app also connects to Google’s image model, Nano Banana, and video model, Veo.
The Gemini Mac app is free to download, but Google ties higher usage and more capable models to paid plans like Google AI Plus, AI Pro, and AI Ultra.
