Google has brought its AI Edge Gallery app to macOS, giving Mac users with Apple silicon a new way to run Gemini‑class Gemma models entirely on their machines. The app is said to offer privacy improvements over online Gemma access, as processing occurs locally, keeping prompts and responses on the user’s device. After downloading the app, no internet connection is required.

At launch, AI Edge Gallery on macOS supports five Gemma models, including the new Gemma 4 12B and Gemma 3n for lighter workloads. These models come from Google’s open‑source Gemma line, which the company designs for on‑device and self‑hosted use. Users can download each model through the app and switch between them at will.

To use AI Edge Gallery, users need a Mac running Apple silicon and macOS 14 or later. The app offers chat, image-based questions, and a “Prompt Lab” interface for tasks such as summarizing or generating code snippets. A built‑in model manager helps people monitor downloads and manage disk usage.

Google has also brought its companion app, AI Edge Eloquent, to Mac, which runs dictation and speech‑to‑text locally through the same Edge AI stack. Surprisingly, this software has run flawlessly on my MacBook for a month now, even though it was originally designed for iOS.
