Summer Game Fest has come and gone, and with it another week filled with hype, promises and a lot of game trailers.
But there were a few differences this time around that perhaps only the keenest of observers may have noticed. For instance: did you pick that more games had a release date this time than at the previous Summer Game Fest in 2025?
Last Summer Game Fest, only 15 titles announced across the three major showcases (State of Play, Xbox and the Summer Game Fest showcase) had release dates. This year, that figure doubled to 30 games across the same showcases. However, this could be a coincidence rather than a trend.
“Without knowing the specifics around each game, I don’t think anything has fundamentally changed,” Travis Plane, co-founder and General Manager, Double Jump Communications told Infinite Lives. “I suspect this is merely a representation of where each game is at in its release timeline.”
“What we know, and what we address as part of our consultancy, is that when you announce a game, it is rare that you would reveal a release date too early in your marketing cadence. Timelines constantly move in games and putting a flag in the sand too early is unrealistic.”
Though, if it continues it is a welcome sign for the industry. Last year, there were plenty of examples of how disclosing a release date at the last possible minute hurt the chances of other titles — the most prominent being Hollow Knight: Silksong’s impromptu release last September.

The other trend? Everyone is avoiding Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6’s release window like it’s radioactive. While it could be delayed yet again, it’s currently slated for November 19 this year.
This isn’t a new story — in fact, you likely saw headlines on this just after Sony’s State of Play, where it seemed developers were cramming all of their titles into September to escape the marketing radius of what is deemed to be one of the world’s largest games.
Xbox’s showcase had the last-mover advantage here. Curiously, few of its games flagged September launch dates, with many opting for October instead. That includes its biggest release from its showcase, Gears of War: E-Day.
I’ve gone ahead and visualised this trend just to show how stark it all is. A few caveats with the data: I’ve excluded games without a firm date, and only focused on the three major showcases — which still covers plenty of games.
I’ve also excluded Nintendo from this analysis — technically it’s showcase isn’t part of Summer Game Fest. But it’s interesting to see that few of its major first-party releases clash either. Nintendo is also bucking the new trend on release dates: we only know the launch dates of its imminent first-party titles, despite it saying some will launch this year.
The hot guess floating around is that the much-vaunted Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake — revealed right at the end of its showcase and set to debut this year — will launch around the same window as GTA 6, positioned as a holiday game. But we won’t know for sure until Nintendo provides more information.
Regardless, Summer Game Fest week has done its job. There’s a lot to look forward to over the next year, and a strange sense of industry stability emerged from the event. It won’t last long. Xbox and Ubisoft both just flagged another round of layoffs. The hype is over, back to business as usual.
