Asus has shown off a unique solution to the GPU power cable overheating problem that has plagued so many RTX 50-series graphics cards at Computex 2026: switch from 12V to 48V. As VideoCardz reports, this allowed it to run an ROG Matrix RTX 5090 at 1,000W over a single cable without overheating concerns.
The generally accepted reason some of Nvidia’s high-end Blackwell graphics cards have experienced melting-cable problems is that too much current is flowing through individual wires. That causes a cascade as wires overheat, dumping excess current into the rest of the wires, and it quickly overheats and burns out. Switching from 12V to 48V is no easy task, but in Asus’ demo, the system seems much more robust in handling these high-wattage cards.
Featuring a custom PSU converted for the purpose and a bespoke 12V-2×6 cable rated at 48V, the system can reportedly deliver up to 1,200W through a single cable. That’s double the 600W the stock RTX 5090 demands, but with the higher wattage, the actual current running through the cables is much reduced. ComputerBase’s napkin math suggests a standard 5090 pulling 600W at 12V would pull 50A in total, or around 8A per wire. At 48V, though, it’s just 12.5A total, or just over 2A per wire.

“Designed for the growing power demands of AI-era GPUs, the 48V architecture reduces transmission current, minimizes power loss and heat generation, and improves overall power efficiency and reliability,” Asus explained. “Integrated 48V / 12V intelligent detection logic enables automatic power rail switching for compatibility with both next-generation 48V and traditional 12V systems.”
Current ATX PSUs don’t have a native 48V rail, and many modern PCs are built around 12V systems, so this isn’t something you could buy off the shelf and plug into your motherboard and GPU. But it’s an intriguing prototype that suggests there are unique solutions to the growing power demands of modern GPUs and the stresses they place on power cabling.
That said, just adding a second 12v-2×6 connector on the most high-end cards is another, perhaps easier solution. The most elegant, though? It’s got to be the ASUS BTF stealth power connector that adds another PCI-like connector at the base of the card for power delivery, ditching the need for cables entirely.
