If you’ve got $550 to spend on a new graphics card, the smart option used to be to buy an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB. But AMD’s new RX 9070 GRE could upend that if there’s strong enough stock and retailers stick to the suggested price, as Wccftech reports. With 12GB of VRAM and RTX-5070-like performance, this $550 GPU could be the darling of the mid-range for the rest of the year.
Graphics card prices have risen dramatically this generation, partly due to higher MSRPs and later due to rising global electronics prices driven by the AI infrastructure buildout. That means that even mid-range cards like the RTX 5070 are upwards of $650 in most cases, and even the RTX 5060 Ti is $550, if not more.
But the RX GRE claims performance at RTX 5070 levels, about 25% faster than a 5060 Ti 16GB across the board. In some cases, though, like Monster Hunter Wilds, AMD claims it can be as much as 40% faster. Even in games with ray tracing enabled, like Assassin’s Creed Shadows, it claims more than a 30% performance advantage at 1440p.

We’ll need to wait to see how this card performs in third-party, real-world testing to know for sure, but these numbers appear positive for now.
It only has 12GB of VRAM, compared to the 16GB on the higher-end RTX 5060 Ti, but it’s enough for all the games that demand over 8GB, and a bit more to prove it against more demanding games in the future. It also supports FSR4 and AMD’s frame generation, as well as the same RT accelerators as the higher-end 9070 and 9070 XT.
With a 220W TDP, it’s impressively efficient, too. That could mean there’s lots of thermal headroom on golden samples, or at the very least makes this a strong candidate for small-form-factor gaming systems.
It will just come down to how well this card can hold its price. The RX 9070 should be around 10% more powerful, and yet you can sometimes find it for just over $600. It’s the better card and worth stretching for if you find an affordable version. But the 9070 GRE looks likely to have a solid place in the lineup, especially for those already maxing out their budget at its price point.
