A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms continues to prove that the Game of Thrones universe remains as strong as ever. The spin-off continues to garner high ratings on websites like IMDb, and the fifth episode just set a new record.
In the Name of the Mother, the show’s fifth episode, is now the spin-off’s highest-rated episode on IMDb. Before Sunday night’s airing, the episode reached a 9.9 rating on IMDb. As of Monday afternoon, the episode sits at 9.8/10 based on 41,000 ratings and counting. It’s still an impressive score, narrowly edging out the 9.7 rating held by the show’s fourth episode, Seven.
If the rating stays at 9.8, In the Name of the Mother will be in elite company on IMBb. Only three Game of Thrones episodes—The Rains of Castamere, Battle of the Bastards, and The Winds of Winter—hold ratings of 9.9. In the Name of the Mother is now tied at 9.8 with Game of Thrones’ Hardhome, a season 5 episode where Jon Snow squares off against the Night King and the Army of the Dead. The only episode with a 10/10 is Ozymandias, an episode from the final season of Breaking Bad.
There will be spoilers for episodes 4-5 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
In Seven, Dunk (Peter Claffley) attacks Prince Aerion Targaryen (Finn Bennett), and he’s falsely accused of kidnapping Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell). After Dunk requests a trial by combat, Aerion changes it to a trial by seven—a seven-on-seven fight where the accused and the accuser pick six knights to fight beside them in battle or face punishment.
In the Name of the Mother is what many Game of Thrones fans would call a “battle episode,” where the primary storyline depicts a major battle. In episode 5, the Trial of Seven is the integral fight sequence. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is much smaller in scale than Game of Thrones and also has a smaller budget, meaning showrunner Ira Parker had to be creative in how to portray the battle. Parker told CBR that the fifth episode utilized fog and unusual camera angles to take the audience into the fight with Dunk instead of putting the focus on a huge crowd.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on author George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. Martin co-created the HBO show with Parker. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows the unlikely friendship between Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall and his squire, Egg.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has one more episode in its first season, which will air on HBO and HBO Max on February 22. The series has already been renewed for a second season, which is expected to premiere in 2027.
