Some details about AMD’s next-generation Threadripper CPUs have leaked. Codenamed “Mustang Peak,” the new chips will use a new TR6 socket, meaning existing Threadripper 7000 and 9000 owners on the TR5 platform won’t be able to use them as a drop-in upgrade. The leak also confirms the chips will be built on TSMC’s 2nm process and support PCIe Gen 6.

AMD’s Threadripper CPUs have always existed in an intriguing segment of its product stack. They offer raw performance somewhere between consumer Ryzen and Epyc server chips, giving prosumers and HEDT fans some real muscle, although prices have risen dramatically in recent generations. The Threadripper 10000 generation is likely to do the same again, both in performance and pricing.

This new leak comes from AMD’s own technical documentation portal and reveals information on chip IDs, process technology, and socket support.

With its Zen 6 architecture and new CCD layout with 12 cores each rather than 8, the top Threadripper 10000 chip should offer 144 cores and 288 threads. There are also rumors of super-high clock speeds with Zen 6: likely in excess of 6GHz in limited-thread workloads, and even closing in on 7GHz if some rumors are to be believed. While that’s unlikely for Threadripper, if it can hold high-5GHz clock speeds across all cores at once, the performance uplift would be dramatic.

PCIe 6 support is an exciting addition, too, as it brings additional GPU bandwidth and greater storage support. PCIe 6 SSDs might not have much use for gaming, but for AI training and working on large datasets, they’re going to double performance to up to 1Tb/s for an x16 slot.

We still need AMD to provide the official core counts, clock speeds, memory speed support, and chipset details for these new chips, but details are starting to surface as we edge closer to their launch. Expect Threadripper 10000 to debut sometime after mid-2027, with Ryzen 10000 consumer CPU making its first appearance earlier in the year.
