Background Apps and Process List
Improve performance and stop buffering
Don’t let the vague title fool you. Here’s a powerful solution to a problem everyone with a Fire TV Stick has probably experienced: the buffering wheel. With Background Apps and the Process List, you can better identify why your device is running so slowly and make adjustments. Think of it as a task manager for your living room.
Behind the scenes, this app will check each running part: active processes, background tasks, and old app remnants that can mess with the device’s memory. From there, you can shut down those processes; no extra steps are needed.

Send Files to TV
Move photos, videos, and documents wirelessly
Your device isn’t just for streaming video content. It can also fast become a local media powerhouse thanks to Send Files to TV, or SFTTV. Designed to move files between gadgets without wires or online storage, the solution lets files go from a phone or laptop directly to your Fire TV Stick.
All you need is a shared Wi-Fi network. Install the app on both devices, then open it; it automatically detects your Fire TV Stick receiver. You can then send files instantly, at speeds far faster than Bluetooth.
Though it doesn’t require sideloading, SFTTV offers even more when it’s part of your setup. It turns your Fire TV Stick into a mini entertainment server with no fuss.

Stream nearly unlimited documentaries for $4.99
Founded by the Discovery Channel creator, Curiosity Stream is the place to go for high-quality documentaries spanning science, technology, nature, and history. The collection is vast, yet it never feels cluttered. Starting at $4.99 per month, the app offers a clean, ad-free interface and handles 4K beautifully when supported. Curiosity Stream also offers extra bundles, such as Tastemade, that make it easy to expand your library, whether you’re a kid or an adult.
For viewers craving intellectual depth over formulaic entertainment, this app turns your Fire TV Stick into a private learning hub, one that feels as luxurious as cable’s best channels but costs less than your coffee subscription.
DefSquid
Protect your device from malware and junk files
Here’s a solution best described as one-part scanner, another part shield. It’s a free system utility specifically built for Fire OS and Android TV, designed to improve performance while keeping your network activity private. Among DefSquid’s many tools are the ability to check your internet speed in-app, scan apps and files for malware or odd behavior, and clear junk files left by long-forgotten apps.
DefSquid goes beyond simple optimization; it’s also about giving users more control. Use it regularly to run maintenance checks, expose unnecessary data, and a lot more.
The Criterion Channel
Stream restored films and curated collections
Open even the best streaming services, and one of the first things you might notice is just how much of the content is plagued by terrible user ratings. Not so with the Criterion Channel, where handpicked classics take center stage. This is where old masters breathe differently and aren’t buried by recent releases, both good and bad.
Featuring over 3,000 meticulously restored films, the Criterion Channel is less a streaming service and more a film school, which you get to control at any time with your remote. Priced at $100 per year and accessible across all your streaming devices, the service includes exclusive remasters with consistent 1080p or 4K playback, exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes commentaries, thematic collections, and a lot more. New users can try the Criterion Channel for free for seven days, and there are always promotions that significantly reduce the price.
TuneIn Radio
Stream podcasts, music, and live sports
Available across several devices, including your Fire TV Stick, TuneIn Radio offers more than 100,000 channels across categories like comedy, sports, podcasts, and, yes, music. Though TuneIn Radio is always free, a premium subscription unlocks ad-free listening and offline playback. It also supports live event coverage of the NFL, MLB, and other sports, as well as background listening.
TuneIn Radio serves as a reminder that your Fire TV Stick isn’t only about things you watch. It’s also a surprisingly versatile device for what you hear.
Easy setups
Each of these apps works right out of the box via the Amazon Appstore, no sideloading required. With the right mix of optimization, education, news, and entertainment, your Fire TV Stick can do far more than just stream video.
