Adam Doud/ZDNETFollow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google.Last week, while my beloved Cubbies were fighting for their playoff lives, I decided to see how speeds were doing on the three biggest carriers in the US. Since my hometown of Chicago was one of the first test beds for 5G, I’ve been maintaining an interest in it throughout my career. You see, back when 5G was still in its infancy, we were sold two big promises about 5G — speed and capacity. For speed, the biggest example we were given was “You can download an entire movie while you sit on…

A venture capital fund is looking for ideas that are out of bounds for traditional investors, seeding technology that may only come to fruition decades down the line, but where researchers can show real results in the lab. Deep Future specializes in technological long-shot ideas that struggle to get funding because there isn’t the kind of clear runway to quick profitability that most venture capitalists like. Funding is limited to around $500,000 per project, enough money to get prototypes ready to show off and entice others to invest. Partner Pablos Holman spent over a decade as an inventor at Intellectual…
We know that people with ADHD often approach work differently than might a neurotypical person. And while ADHD can manifest in traits like impulsivity and being easily distracted, the condition is also associated with many desirable qualities—including, it seems, incredible creativity. That’s the upshot of new research recently presented at the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) Congress in Amsterdam. Researchers conducted a pair of studies involving 750 participants, finding that those with ADHD may experience more frequent episodes of mind-wandering, and that that, in turn, could lead to greater creative thinking abilities. “Previous research pointed to mind-wandering as a possible factor linking…
Microsoft has reminded customers again today that systems running Home and Pro editions of Windows 11 23H2 will stop receiving security updates next month. This follows two other alerts in which the company asked users to upgrade their systems to the latest available Windows 11 release, the first in August and the second in September. However, as Redmond explains on the Windows release health dashboard, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions of Windows 11 23H2 will remain under mainstream support until November 2026. “On November 11, 2025, Windows 11, version 23H2 (Home and Pro editions) will reach end of servicing.…
“Like riding a bike” is shorthand for the remarkable way that our bodies remember how to move. Most of the time when we talk about muscle memory, we’re not talking about the muscles themselves but about the memory of a coordinated movement pattern that lives in the motor neurons, which control our muscles.Yet in recent years, scientists have discovered that our muscles themselves have a memory for movement and exercise. And the more we move, as with riding a bike or other kinds of exercise, the more those cells begin to make a memory of that exercise. Read the full…

Famed roboticist and iRobot founder Rodney Brooks has sounded the alarm on a humanoid robot investment bubble. He’s not the only one. In a recent essay, Brooks calls out the billions of venture dollars being poured into humanoid robot companies like Figure. His take: Despite the amount of money being injected into the industry, humanoids won’t be able to learn dexterity — or the fine motor movements with hands — rendering them essentially useless. His take might surprise some, especially those VCs investing in the sector. But not the multiple robotics-focused VCs and AI scientists who have told TechCrunch in…
Building connected data ecosystems for AI at scaleModern integration platforms are helping enterprises streamline fragmented IT environments and prepare their data pipelines for AI-driven transformation.Enterprise IT ecosystems are often akin to sprawling metropolises—multi-layered environments where aging infrastructure intersects with sleek new technologies against a backdrop of constantly ballooning traffic.Similarly to how driving through a centuries-old city that’s been retrofitted for automobiles and skyscrapers can cause gridlock, enterprise IT systems frequently experience data bottlenecks. Today’s IT landscapes encompass legacy mainframes, cloud-native applications, on-premises systems, third-party SaaS tools, and a growing edge ecosystem. Information flowing through this patchwork gets caught in a…
