Xbox to Decide Which Games Are Console Exclusives on a ‘Case-By-Case Basis’

Xbox has confirmed that it will make decisions regarding console exclusivity for its first‑party games on a case‑by‑case basis, rather than using one fixed rule for every release. The company explained that each project will have its own platform strategy, which could result in some titles sticking to Xbox and PC, and others launching on additional platforms.

In an interview with Gamertag Radio, Xbox CCO Matt Booty said the organization’s leaders want to balance giving players more ways to access games and creating clear reasons to buy into the Xbox ecosystem. Big single‑player titles can remain Xbox exclusives, with recent announcements like Gears of War: E‑Day and Clockwork Revolution confirmed as games that will not come to PlayStation. Meanwhile, the company plans to continue supporting major multiplayer and live-service games on multiple platforms.

Another important point is how Xbox will communicate these decisions. The company says that when it announces a game’s release date, it will also clearly list all platforms for that title. That means players should know from day one whether a new first‑party game is a console exclusive or a multiplatform release.

Xbox also says it will honor previous commitments for games already announced for other platforms, rather than retroactively limiting them to its own hardware.
