Announced Monday at Apple’s WWDC keynote, iOS 27 focuses on speed, stability, and efficiency over flashy design changes. Apple says the software will make everyday tasks faster across the same range of devices that already run iOS 26, which means many older iPhones, as far as iPhone 11, should feel quicker once users install it. This will lead to faster app launches, shorter wait times in Photos, quicker AirDrop transfers, and more.
Apple says iOS 27 can open apps up to 30% faster, load new shots in Photos up to 70% faster, and complete AirDrop transfers up to 80% faster—all on the same hardware iPhone owners already run.
The brand also says iOS 27 speeds up switching between Wi‑Fi and mobile data and makes file management snappier on devices that share the same core software. These figures will depend on each user’s device and workload, but they outline the scale of improvements Apple targets.
Behind the scenes, Apple has cleaned up older code, fixed long‑standing bugs, and tuned system processes so they do less redundant work. A new CPU scheduler in iOS 27 improves how tasks run on performance and efficiency cores. This makes scrolling smoother and helps control temperatures and power usage, which is expected to give iPhones better battery life in daily use.
Apple Intelligence features, a more capable Siri, and modest refinements to the Liquid Glass design will also go live with this iOS update, which rolls out this fall.
