Android Update Tackles Fake Calls, Opens AirDrop to More Devices

On Tuesday, Google’s Android Drop introduced Fake Call Detection to the Phone by Google app and added AirDrop and Quick Share compatibility to more devices.

Fake Call Detection works when both you and your real contact use Android 12 or newer, have Phone by Google as the dialer, and use RCS through Google Messages. (That’s too many limiting factors, in my opinion, but I suppose something is better than nothing.) The system uses an encrypted ping to verify that a call from a saved contact is actually coming from their phone. If the check fails or reveals clear spoofing, the incoming call screen displays a warning that the call may be fake.

Google says this builds on its earlier scam detection strategy for Pixel, which already flags probable spam or fraud calls. The new system focuses on AI deepfakes and impersonation scams, in which criminals spoof numbers and clone voices to trick people into thinking their friends or family are in trouble.

Google is also adding more Quick Share and AirDrop interoperability to more Android phones. Users will see nearby Apple devices as targets in Quick Share and can send or receive photos, videos, and documents over local wireless connections without mobile data or cables. This started on Pixel 10 and is now reaching quite a few partner OEM phones in 2026, but funny enough, it has only been added to the Pixel 8a, the budget-friendly Pixel, and not the Pixel 8 Pro, the lineup’s flagship.
