Microsoft is toying with a quieter approach to Windows via PowerToys, its operating system customization utilities for “power users.” The test centers on an animated footer above the taskbar featuring animated grass decorated with moving bunnies, mushrooms, and butterflies.
The idea is for Windows to feel less distracting and more calming. The idea surfaced at a recent Windows Insiders meetup, where PowerToys lead Clint Rutkas revealed a new design that renders a strip of pixel-art scenes along the bottom of the screen, including a calm meadow with gently moving grass. He mentioned that the footer will likely be included in PowerToys once the team finalizes the design and documentation, as reported by PCWorld.
The company highlighted a few changes under this label, including a more streamlined device setup with fewer steps and reboots, simpler controls to turn off or tune content feeds and widgets, and fewer notifications throughout the day to cut distractions.
Recent updates about a project called “Windows K2” show that the MSN news feed is now hidden by default, but you can find it with an extra click in the Widgets section. Instead of ads and promotions, the focus will be on the widgets that users choose to display.
Similarly, regular Windows 11 updates are incorporating small visual changes, like animated icons in Settings and some subtle movements in system controls. Microsoft calls these little changes “moments of joy,” which aim to keep the user experience light, easy, and relaxing.
