Google’s AI Studio now lets users build native Android apps within minutes, all from their web browser—no Android Studio required. The company announced the update at this week’s Google I/O 2026, and pre-registration is currently open.

AI Studio uses Kotlin and Jetpack Compose to create full app projects from text or speech prompts. Users only need to describe an app idea for AI Studio to generate the app; after that, they can refine the results via chat or direct code edits.

You might be wondering how it’s possible to develop an app without testing it on an emulator. AI Studio now also includes an integrated Android emulator in the browser, so users can run and test their apps without installing Android Studio or configuring a local environment.

They can also connect a physical Android phone via USB and use the built-in ADB support to install and try the app directly on the device. Another option lets users export the code as a ZIP file or push it to GitHub, then continue editing in Android Studio if they wish.

Google says the first wave of use cases focuses on utility apps, simple social tools, and experiences that use device hardware such as GPS, cameras, or other sensors. The company also highlights Gemini integration, which can add AI-driven features to these apps through the same platform.

The new AI Studio will also help with distribution, as developers can publish their apps directly to Google Play’s internal testing track.

Google positions AI Studio as a fast entry point for app creation and encourages teams to use it to prototype and quickly validate ideas. That said, Android Studio remains the primary environment for larger projects that require extensive testing, optimization, and complex features. AI Studio won’t be replacing it anytime soon.
