Saddle up, boys and girls, because the Yellowstone universe is expanding once more with a new spin-off that also acts as a direct sequel to the mothership series. It will follow Dutton matriarch Beth (Kelly Reilly) and her husband Rip (Cole Hauser) as they embark on a new path together on their new ranch outside of Montana.

Before the new series arrives on Paramount+, here are the top four things you need to know about Taylor Sheridan’s Dutton Ranch.

    The Plot

    A whole new chapter begins

Dutton Ranch will say goodbye to Montana and the whole family drama vibe to accompany Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser)—the emotional backbone of Yellowstone—as they set out on their own to face a whole new chapter together down in the Deep South, where they hope to find some peace and quiet.

The couple leaves behind the ghosts of Yellowstone Ranch in the nine-part spin-off, which will pick up where the Yellowstone finale ended. Yellowstone Dutton Ranch has been sold to Chief Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) and the Broken Rock Reservation. In the wake of her brother Jamie’s (Wes Bentley) death at the hands of her husband, the couple strike out on their own with their ward, Carter (Finn Little), in tow.

Per Paramount’s official logline, the show is set in South Texas, where power is rooted in land and legacy, rival ranches control more than just cattle, forgiveness is fleeting, and survival comes at a cost that just might be your soul. The Dutton Ranch will be the new home to Beth and Rip and will serve as a testament to the peace they sought, fought for, and nearly died for as they’ve come to cherish their 7,000-acre ranch.

With tough times and stiff competition, the couple do what they must to survive, all while ensuring Carter becomes the man he’s supposed to be. Dutton Ranch also catches the attention of a ruthless rival ranch that will stop at nothing to protect its empire. As such, Beth and Rip’s relationship will be tested in new ways.

    The Cast

Expect to see Oscar nominees in major roles

Alongside Reilly, Hauser, and Little reprising their roles, joining them are a whole new cast, and some of those include big names. Oscar nominees Ed Harris and Annette Bening will star in key roles. Harris will play Everett McKinney, a “weathered veteran and veterinarian,” and Bening will play the role of Beulah Jackson, “a powerful, cunning, and charming head of a major ranch in Texas,” per Deadline.

Other new additions include Jai Courtney (Suicide Squad) as Rob-Will, Juan Pablo Raba (Delirium) as Joaquin, J.R. Villarreal (Black Scorpion) as Azul, Jessica Belkin (Pretty Little Liars) as Cassie, Iman Crosson (Wonder Man) as Ethan Till, James Eddie (The Meanest Man in Texas) as Tommy, Brittany Hoffner (Good Morning) as Frankie-Mae, Marc Menchaca (Homeland) as Zachariah, a “newly released jailbird trying to rebuild his life as a wrangler and cowboy,” and Natalie Alyn Lind (The Goldbergs) as Oreana, who looks to be Carter’s new girlfriend. Paramount has also announced that country singer Morgan Wade, who is best known for her song “Wilder Days,” will also appear throughout season one in a recurring role as a popular barkeep named Carol.

As far as whether we’ll see any other Yellowstone characters appear in the spin-off, well, we just don’t know yet. Given the show’s setting, it’s possible that Jimmy (Jefferson White) might stop in for a visit since he works at The Four Sixes Ranch down that way, but that is not confirmed. While it’s probably less likely, there’s also a chance Beth’s brother Kayce (Luke Grimes) might take a break from his job as a U.S. Marshal to look in on his family. We can’t rule out the possibility that his work might even take him that far down south. We’ll just have to wait and see.

    The trailer

Dutton Ranch will be much more intense than Yellowstone

The official Dutton Ranch trailer released on Tuesday, May 5, and fans got an unflinching look at what’s in store for season one. Early details suggest it will feel more intimate and character-driven but will be fueled by one thing—survival at all costs.

Everything is bigger in Texas, and that includes trouble, so expect plenty of violence. The trailer shows Beth and Rip encountering danger at almost every turn, from brutal challenges and threats from Beulah Jackson’s rival ranch to explosions, intense romance, dead bodies, and true Western showdowns with so many guns that John Wick would have a field day. Expect a lot more grit, much more emotion—including Beth’s trademark sass and abrasiveness—and plenty of tension amidst riveting drama. Oh, and there’s also a leopard in the mix.

While Dutton Ranch takes place in the world of Yellowstone, it isn’t just a continuation—it’s an evolution. Instead of placing the main focus on the ranch itself, the spin-off will expand the Yellowstone universe into Texas ranching culture. It will also shift the spotlight fully onto Beth and Rip’s life together, as well as their future, while introducing new enemies, new alliances, high-stakes ranch warfare, and complex, morally gray characters. If Yellowstone was about legacy, Dutton Ranch looks to be about the cost of survival in this type of world.
