Apple has raised the Mac Mini’s starting price without actually altering its price tag. By discontinuing the computer’s entry-level configuration, the brand has effectively bumped its starting price by $200.
On Friday, MacRumors noticed that Apple had removed the $599 Mac Mini variant with 256GB SSD storage from its online storefront, making the $799 512GB version its new base model.
Analysts say the new pricing comes amid increased demand for Mac Mini systems. This demand is partly driven by AI and other heavy tasks that require more memory and storage. Apple executives have recently pointed to strong consumer interest in desktop Macs, which has strained supply and led to tight availability in some regions. The same goes for the new MacBook Neo, whose budget-friendly price point has led to skyrocketing popularity.
For buyers, the removal of the 256GB Mac Mini means there’s one less semi-affordable Mac option out there. For those who can swing the $799 version, at least it means improved computing power for creative tasks and generative AI. Others will have to seek out used or refurbished units to secure a less powerful model.
