More than two years after selling his majority stake in the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban is still fielding questions about whether he plans to repurchase the franchise. However, the entrepreneur’s position appears unchanged.
In December 2023, Cuban sold 73 percent of the Mavericks to the Adelson family, making them the majority owners of the NBA team. During the Adelsons’ reign, the franchise has made a series of shocking moves, including trading star player Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2025.
In a forthcoming appearance on Portfolio Players, a podcast produced by Front Office Sports, Dan Roberts, the host, asked Cuban if he would be interested in buying the Mavericks back from the Adelsons.
Cuban was candid in his response: “If there was any chance of being able to do that anymore I would, but that’s just not the game anymore,” he said.

According to Cuban, multiple people expressed their frustration with the franchise’s new direction to him. He added that while he would be happy to contribute his equity to a potential sale, he didn’t expect such a situation to come to fruition. “I told them I didn’t think it would happen, that I didn’t think the Adelsons had any interest in selling,” he told Roberts. “And they don’t.”
Cuban’s assessment appears to be correct. “The team is not for sale and the families look forward to expanding their ownership stake over time,” a source told Marc Stein in February.
While reacquiring his stake in the Mavericks may be off the table, Cuban hasn’t ruled out purchasing another NBA franchise. However, he acknowledged that geography would be a factor in his decision.
